The AS5045 supports SSI and PWM, so for I have been unable to interface the Arduino or the mBed using SSI (I tried using the Avago AEAT-6600-T16). If the AS5045 supports 12Bit resolution on the PWM interface and you need it I would use that, I have not done it but it looks a lot simpler. If you do manage to get the SSI interface working please post the code to the blog as it would be a great help to me. You might consider some of the other AMS chips that support SPI and I2C.
I have been working with Shawn Rezaei from AMS and he provided the following guide for the AS5048A, it includes the PWM communication.
